. After moving to Australia, he became a lecturer in economics at the University of New South Wales in 1972. He was appointed as head of the university's economic history department in 1985. His dissertation in comparative labour history was published as ''Working-Class Life: The "American Standard" in Comparative Perspective, 1899–1913'' in 1982.
